Assignment 1
Part 1 Exercises
While doing these exercises I found that it was very hard for me to draw with my arm rather than my wrist; however, as I went along, I began to feel more comfortable with it. When looking at the one minute drawing compared to the 10 minute drawing, I see that it was mapping out placement with scribbles and not much detail. I felt very rushed on the 1 minute drawing with very little time to look at my still life and then draw it. With not having much experience in drawing, it was difficult to get an accurate perception of my still life onto the paper. On the other hand, by the time I got to the 10 minute drawing I had everything mapped out to the best of my ability. With more time, I was able to go into more detail using different pressure of the charcoal along with utilizing my ruler and adding in lines to draw more accurate perceptions of the sill life. Also, with more time I was able to better understand the relationships between the objects and then create those relationships into my gesture drawing. With using different pressure and mass, I was able to show the true shape and contour of the objects in the 10 minute drawing compared to the 1 minute. Throughout these exercises, I had tried standing differently, focus using more of my arm to draw than with my wrist, and also started with different objects within the still life. I found it difficult to figure out how to use the time I had for each drawing with adding in detail equally throughout the objects. As I mentioned earlier, in the beginning I felt rushed in my drawing, in which as I progressed with each exercise, I was able to capture more of what I perceived of my still life and draw it onto the paper. That being said, I feel that overall, my 10 minute drawing was my strongest because I had some extra time to make changes and add more detail than I did with the other drawings.

Assignment 3
Research and Rough Sketches
Self Portrait Drawing and Inspiration Picture
The artists that I looked at and their self portraits inspired my work because the face broken up into different pieces or sections really attracted me to the drawings. I think they attracted me because the sections or pieces of the face highlighted all the different parts that make up a face. At first, I had no idea how to approach my own self portrait. I was struggling with my sketches and how I wanted it to look, but nothing turned out how I quite picture it. I really found it helpful to use the graphing technique to tackle my own self portrait. I think it was that much easier because the self portraits that inspired me were already broken up, but with the graphing technique I was able to break down the different parts even more to get more precise. It was difficult at first to get the correct measurements down and then figuring out how I need to enlarge it to my 18x24 Strathmore paper, but I eventually figured it out. I decided to pose and the background by using the same design and everything besides taking my own face and drawing it in to replace the original artist’s face. Although I struggled, erased, redrew, and restarted my drawing multiple times, I really enjoyed creating my self portrait.
Assignment 4
Assignment 5- Diptych
I really enjoyed creating my diptych drawing. I decided to create my diptych on living dandelions and dead dandelions. I thought of this idea because my bed sheets and some of my room décor are dead dandelions. I came across some struggles and challenges while drawing my dandelions. For one, dandelions have many pedals that are uniquely placed/patterned, in which I struggled with drawing my dandelion pedal’s to look realistic. I also ran into challenges in how to fill in the background of the dandelions. I tried to fill in the background drawing in smaller dandelions to make it seem they were further back. However, with that it made it seem like some of them were floating. To try to fix the floating dandelions, I tried to fill in the empty spaces with grass. Another struggle I had was the big, half dandelion in the very front of the drawing. I struggled because I think I over did the pedals and should have kept it simpler in terms of the pedals. I feel that I was successful in drawing the leaves coming off of the dandelions. I also feel that I was successful in some of the drawings of dandelions.
